Foliage forays in northern New England (AP)

Hiking, biking and driving aren't the only ways to get a glimpse of fall foliage. In northern New England, there's no shortage of off-the-beaten-path opportunities for leaf peepers.

In Vermont:

_The Green Mountain Flyer, a foliage train, makes twice-daily trips between Chester, Vt., and Bellows Falls, Vt., through Oct. 15. Cost: $17 for adults, $13 for children. For more information, visit http://www.rails-vt.com.

_Stratton Mountain uses a ski lift gondola to offer rides to sightseers, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Oct. 9. The ride takes visitors to the peak of the mountain, where they can walk trails, see lookout points and visit the Stratton Mountain Fire Tower. In New Hampshire:

_In North Conway, N.H., the Conway Scenic Railroad offers excursions in the Mount Washington Valley area. Trips range from an hour or two along the Saco River to all-day excursions through White Mountain National Forest. For an extra fee, passengers on the "notch train" can ride in a 1954 dome car. Riders climb stairs to sit in the dome, a glass bubble on top of the first-class car that offers spectacular views of the Saco River, the mountains and the foliage. In Maine:

_Long Reach Cruises, of Bath, offers a two-hour lower Kennebec River cruise that focuses on lighthouses, foliage and seals.
