We will help, says Downer
Thursday August 16, 2007

Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer
Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer says his country is prepared to help Fiji's interim regime hold elections in 2009 if the vote is credible.

Interim Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama had earlier stated that elections would be held on March 13, 2009.

Bainimarama, who overthrew the Laisenia Qarase led Government in December last year, named the date under pressure from a EU threat to withdraw aid.

"This is creeping progress. We're making progress ever so slowly,'' Downer said according to news.com.

"Of course, these would have to be credible elections.

"An independent electoral commission would have to supervise those elections, but we would be prepared to provide assistance to make sure that those elections happened on time.''

Australia has had sanctions in place against Fiji since the coup.
