Teachers must be paid: Court
Tuesday August 14, 2007

The High Court today ordered that teachers who went on strike be paid for the two-week school holiday.

The Ministry of Education had announced that the members of Fijian Teachers Association not be paid for the Term Two school break, which the interim Government had moved forward as part of its contingency plan to address the teachers' strike two weeks ago.

Justice Filimone Jitoko said that the interim Government cannot withhold the teachers pay as they were entitled to it.

The teachers, however, will not be paid for the two days they went on strike before calling it off on August 3.

Justice Jitoko also ordered that FTA president Tevita Koroi be reinstated as Nasinu Secondary School principal when school resumes next week.

The Education Ministry had suspended Koroi for allegedly abusing his authority as a school principal to carry out union activities.
