A high school is in shock over a report that four girls had allegedly been sexually involved with a teacher.
And the principal has referred the case to the Education ministry to investigate.
The school principal, whose identity and that of the school are being withheld, confirmed that she had referred the complaints to the ministry yesterday. The students were understood to have briefed the principal over what had happened.
Questions sent to the ministry deputy secretary professional standards Ram Chandar were referred to the ministry's media unit.
Deputy secretary administration and finance Filipe Jitoko referred questions to the media unit as well.
Late yesterday afternoon, an officer of the unit said they were still waiting for the details of the case.
Police assistant spokesperson Corporal Prashila Narayan said no report had been lodged with them as yet.
But she said a formal complaint need not necessarily be made for police to start investigations into cases of a sexual nature involving minors.
A reliable source at the school said the frustrated parents of the four girls turned up at the school on Tuesday to question the principal and her assistants over what the school was doing about the case.
The source said the case came to light after text messages from the teacher were found on the students' mobile phones by other students.
The source said students were not allowed to bring mobile phones to school but the four girls were carrying phones as their line of communication with the teacher.
It is understood the teacher teaches Forms Five and Six students and would normally ask the girls to clean the science laboratory in school.
The Ministry of Education would normally suspend teachers who were being investigated for such cases to await the ruling of the court.
