President yet to receive petition
Wednesday August 15, 2007

The President’s Office has not received a petition from a group of lawyers calling for the reinstatement of suspended Chief Justice Daniel Fatiaki.

Secretary to the President, Rupeni Nacewa confirmed that the petition has not reached his office yet even though it was expected to be handed over to Government house yesterday.

“The lawyers have been saying that the petition will reach us very soon but we have been waiting for it ever since.”

He said the President Ratu Josefa Iloilo will need to look at it first before he can comment.

Suva lawyer Hemendra Nagin said they hoped to deliver the petition to the President yesterday.

The petition was circulated two months ago asking lawyers to express their concerns on the delay of the interim Government to substantiate allegations against Fatiaki.

Fatiaki was suspended following the December military takeover.

The interim Government had been given an additional 60 days from mid-July to set up a tribunal to look into the supposed allegations against Justice Fatiaki.
