THE 118 new recruits at the police passing-out parade yesterday have been congratulated on their choice to join the country's law enforcement arm and urged to persevere.

Chief guest David Moore, who is the team leader of the Pacific Regional Policing Initiative (PRPI), congratulated the Fiji Police Force recruits on their achievements.

"You must never forget the learning and skills you have gained over the past 16 weeks and you should take all opportunities in the future to improve your knowledge,"Mr Moore said.

"Some of this will come from experience also but much must come from you.

Mr Moore told the recruits at the Fiji Police Academy they would be challenged throughout their career to forget the training they had undergone and to look the other way in some cases.

He urged them to resist such attempts because it would reflect badly on the recruits and would bring disrepute to the force.

He reflected on Commissioner of Police Andrew Hughes' message in the June issue of the police magazine where Mr Hughes referred to the force as a family.

Mr Moore urged the recruits to keep in mind that in a family, the actions of one affected the remaining members of the family and adverse actions would be demoralising for the majority who had served tirelessly for the community.

"When you face those challenges, I ask you to remember your training and the reasons why you were here today,"he said.

He praised the recruits for meeting the high standards that were set.

He said while the training was rigorous, self discipline was still paramount.

"Over the past few months you have clearly shown you have the character and qualities to become a valuable member of the Fiji Police Force.

Three awards were given out.

The first award was for the best all round recruit and the winner of the Baton of Honour, which went to constable Epi Vuki Vakatawa.

The Commissioner's book prize for scoring the highest aggregate in all written examinations went to Constable Lognandan Sami Goundan.

The Commandant's book prize for the most improved recruit, was awarded to Constable Ravin Naiker.
