Former students of Nawaka District School celebrate the school’s 75th anniversary

Nawaka District School was a sea of colours yesterday as old scholars gathered there to celebrate its 75th anniversary.

The old scholars, who live all over Fiji and abroad, reunited with friends and relatives to raise funds for the school.

The funds were for a double storey building under construction, a school library and a dormitory.

Spokeswoman Adi Varanisese Derenalagi said there were also a number of overseas-based and former rugby players who turned up to the anniversary.

She said the old scholars were divided according to the different years they completed their studies at the school.

The old scholars were not only from the Tikina o Nawaka but also from Yavusa Naua in Saunaka, Rukuruku,Vaturu and the vanua o Namataku in the Nausori Highlands.

The event also attracted some of the school's former teachers.

Former school headteacher Jerry Cakau, who taught at the school for 11 years, said he was grateful to the organisers for coming up with the idea of having a Motoraicewa Day.

Mr Cakau, who taught at the school from 1979 to 1988, said there had been a lot of developments in the school since his time there.

He commended the Tui Nawaka, Ratu Apisai Naevo, for having a vision for the children of his tikina.

"He was far sighted, and he had a dream of educating all the children here so that they could be someone in life.

Mr Cakau said he worked closely with Ratu Apisai during his term as a headteacher of the school.
