Military tells Government to resign
Saturday October 07, 2006
The Fiji Military Forces has called on the Fiji Prime Minister and his Cabinet ministers to resign following revelations of "corrupt practices" during the High Court case on the Agriculture Scam.
In a press statement, military spokesman Major Neumi Leweni said the Government had "lost all semblances of credibility, integrity and honesty and must immediately resign" because of the irreparable damage on the country.
Fiji's Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase and seven other Cabinet ministers have been subpoened to appear before the High Court in relation to the trial of former Agriculture permanent secretary Peniasi Kunatuba.
"The sad part of the whole situation is that our young generation and future leaders of the country are seeing unfolding under their very eyes the state of affairs in government, in particular the Prime Minister and his Cabinet Ministers who are being led like sheep to the slaughter in the High Court," Major Leweni said.
The statement said that all holders of public offices implicated in the scam should tender their resignation to ensure the "sanctity and validity of government leadership was strictly maintained at all times".
The military went on to say that the Government should take all necessary precautions and resign or start afresh by denouncing the evil of 2000.
