Qoliqoli Bill will affect tourism: Army
Saturday October 07, 2006
The Fiji Military Forces says $600million in revenue will be lost in the tourism industry every year if the Qoliqoli Bill is passed.
Captain Seremaia Tuiteci told the submission told the committee that the military will strongly appose the bill because the country was not properly consulted.
He said if this bill is passed the country will be expecting an economic downfall because tourism is the major income earner for Fiji.
"Once the resort and hotel owners pack and leave, not only will the hoteliers suffer but the employee will also be affected.
He said the committee should conduct wider consultations and listen to submissions before making any decision.
"The tourism industry is the back bone of this country and by giving back rightful ownership to landowners will spell disaster for Fiji."
He said by doing this the landowners would want their fishing (qoliqoli) grounds back and this would pose certain restrictions on resort owners.
"We should be fair in our approach and let every body have their say on this bill."
"We as Fijians should be vigilant and think of other races that would be left out."
He said as the two major races, Indians and Fijians should work together for the benefit of this country.
