Army tells chauffer to resign
Tuesday September 04, 2007

An army reservist who is alleged to have been driving ousted Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase around the capital this week has been asked to resign by the Fiji military.

Military spokesman Mosese Tikoitoga told fijilive that the man is also employed by the Prime Ministers Office as a driver.

Lt Colonel Tikoitoga said that it is a security risk to have people loyal to Qarase working in interim PM Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama's office.

"It's a security issue," he said.

The man was taken in by the military yesterday and later released.

Lt-Col Tikoitoga confirms that the man was also questioned in relation to the theft in the PM's Office in early July where a laptop and some electronic items were removed.

Qarase has declined to comment on the matter.
