Sick Alaska cruises

This time of year is normally smooth sailing, as far as ship-borne viruses are concerned. But not if you're cruising to Alaska on one of Celebrity's ships. For the second time this summer, a wave of illness thought to be from norovirus has hit a Celebrity ship along the Alaska coastal route, according to reports.

Normally, the Norwalk alerts are going off in February or March. (Although I caught the Norwalk virus in September and just this last year, in April.)

If you are planning an Alaska cruise on one of the Celebrity ships affected by Norwalk, be warned. If you are feeling the least bit queasy when you board, you could be sent packing (it has happened on other cruise lines).

Also, be certain to familiarize yourself with Celebrity's cruise contract and the rights and responsibilities that you have before you take your cruise.

A summer Norwalk outbreak is unusual, and I imagine that no one is more concerned about this than Celebrity. With a few simple precautions, you can ensure that your vacation won't be ruined by this gastrointestinal virus.
